My Hot Oil Treatment

Now a big part of retaining the length and health of my hair is keeping it well moisturized. Before (and after) each protective style, I like to give myself a nice hot oil and/or deep conditioning treatment. I lucked up and found some of my favorite essential oils at a great price and I jumped on the deal. I paid about $1.25 for each tube and I saw them for $3.29 at beauty supply store in my neighborhood. Can you say STEAL! Anyhow, I got every one they had to offer and some.

The Solution: Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Vitamin E Oil, Argon Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Cocoa butter Oil.

The Process: Lightly wet hair, Saturate in The Solution, Cover in Gold shower cap, Blow dry on Low/Medium Setting for about 10-15 mins, Let sit for 45 mins.

After: Wash and Style as usual

“Seeing Older Black women with locks give me strength because their persona is one of many powerful representations of Black people”

I have been natural since 2008 which makes 5 years now in 2013. My decision was due to research of African Americans and status as a Black student at UC Berkeley. After learning the history of the racial undertones that prompted Black women to straighten their hair, it made me think twice about promoting the idea. Since it was already short (though processed) I cut all the perm out and decided to proceed naturally.

I currently have locs, in which the texture has changed in the locking process. I have been growing for three years now, and they lay on my shoulders. My daily routine doesn’t consist of much but wrapping my hair with a head scarf. I personally like the low maintenance, thus styling is not done often. The product that I use the most is Shea butter, it has done me well.

Seeing Older Black women with locs give me strength because their persona is one of many powerful representations of Black people. My choice of hairstyle is “however it falls”, although sometimes Bantu knots surface. Long term plans are still undecided, but for now I embrace the growth and change. What I have come to love most about wearing natural hair is the Natural Beauty, money that I save in hair care, thus the the time.

I love the process of natural hair that I have experienced with myself and others. At times it made me stand out in ways that made me uncomfortable, but it has made me who I am and love it more. One word of advice: Tune into how your natural hair makes you happy, how it makes you beautiful, and more in tune with your body in different ways. It is a nice experience.

A Moment for Hair Glory!!!!

Wow! ITS OCTOBER 2013 .. this year is just flying by & since my last post I’ve been busy taking care of work & home. So while my hair has been doing what it does (getting all long&pretty) I’ve been doin what I can to help it along the way a little bit.

So I figured out a few things about my hair & what it likes ..

* Garnier Fructis EVERYTHING: shampoo, conditioners, mousse, friz control etc. , it all works well together & my hair doesn’t feel heavy. It doesn’t cost much & you can find it at any convienant/beauty supply store.

* LOC Method: Now I’m not sure if its the LCO or if the ‘L’ stands for liquid or leave-in, so I just do it the simplest way I can…. Liquid – I rinse my hair in lukewarm water after I shampoo, condition & detangle my hair (no combs); Oil – Pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil; Cream – Leave-In Conditioner

* No Heat: Cut the blow dryer, flat irons , pressing combs  off and out of my life (for now!)

* Protective Styling: Protective & low manipulation hair styles. I love cap weaves, havana twist, wash&gos & long braids. All styles are easy to do at home & youtube can & will change your life!

* WATER WATER WATER & more WATER: never deny your hair moisture!!!

Let me say that wearing your natural hair is like a badge of honor & you’d be surprise at who takes notice. For example : I live in the “hood” & I mean HOOD : dope boys/ dope fiends , prissy/ratchet girls & almost every female has a Brazilian/Remy 18-26inch weave or something like it. So imagine the horror of walkin out your door without your weave hair done up , rocking what appears to be a afro in 2013 & theres 30+ people outside looking at you crazy saying “OMG WHAT DID YU DO TO YOUR HAIR!” I put on my best face & a smile & told each one who asked why I cut it (thinning , damage) and to my surprise, I WASN’T shunned , laughed at or gawked , ever persons opinion sounded like music to my ears “looks good on yu Dary , OMG I didnt know your hair was so curly , its so soft , what did yu put in it , is it texturized , its gone be sooo long & grow so quick , its so thick & healthy looking etc” & my favorite from guys “its still long enough to be pulled!” I could go on but yu get it. I was shocked to say the least that my hair was not an ill topic , I was greeted with such awe & respect with my decision to BC.

Im glad I did it & although I will be braiding it soon (for work) im so proud of myself , proud of my strength as a black woman & individuality as a young woman. Im glad I was able to embrace myself as myself , no bells no whistles.
